Definition

1. Instrument of execution used in the Roman Empire. 2. The means by which Jesus Christ was put to death and therefore the primary symbol of the Christian faith, representing the way in which he is believed to have won forgiveness for humankind. Sometimes referred to as a tree, or rood [Old English] (John 19:17-18). 3. Also a symbol of willingness of Christians to accept suffering involved in following Christ (Luke 9:23).
