A-Z: General definitions: Fruit

Definition

Fruit is often used in the Bible metaphorically to mean the result of an action / word / behaviour. In the New Testament the apostle Paul, in his letter to the Galatians, speaks of the 'fruit of the spirit' being love, joy, peace, kindness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22). Jesus' disciples were to be recognised by their 'fruit' (John 15:8) and were to 'bear fruit' by following the example of Jesus (John 15:16).
