A-Z » Seven Deadly Sins

Definition

Usually defined as Pride, Covetousness, Lust / Lechery, Envy, Gluttony, Anger, Sloth. These sins were referred to as deadly because, unless the sinner repented and received forgiveness, they could have deadly consequences for the soul. Another term for 'deadly' is 'mortal'. A mortal sin was an act considered to be so wicked that, unless repented of and forgiven, it condemned the offender to eternal damnation, causing the death of the soul.

1. The action of forgiving; pardon of a fault, remission of a debt. 2. Being freed from the burden of guilt, after committing a sin or crime, through being pardoned by the one hurt or offended.
The spirit which gives life to a human being; the part which lives on after death; a person's inner being (personality, intellect, emotions and will) which distinguishes them from animals.
According to Catholic teaching, sin committed consciously and deliberately, which places the soul in serious jeopardy.
