A-Z » Heaven
Definition
God's abode. According to the Bible, the special place where God and all immortal spirits reside; the blessed place where those accepted by God go to spend eternity as a result of their faith in Jesus Christ. Because in many earlier, especially medieval, depictions of heaven it was thought to be above the clouds, the terms 'heaven' or 'heavens' are sometimes used loosely to mean 'the skies'. To be in heaven is to be permanently in the unveiled presence pf God, an experience of supreme bliss. The New Testament book of Revelation tells that at the end of all things there will be 'a new heaven and a new earth' (Revelation 21:1-2).- Today's New International Version
- 1Then I saw 'a new heaven and a new earth,' for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.
- King James Version
- 1And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. 2And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
