Definition

A prophet, described in Luke's Gospel as the son of Zechariah and Elizabeth (cousin of the Mary), who foretold the coming of Jesus as the Saviour of mankind. He appeared c. AD 27 by the banks of the Jordan preaching repentance and baptism. His role was to 'prepare the way' for the ministry of Jesus whom he baptised. He was later beheaded by King Herod (Matthew 14:3-12).
