A-Z: General definitions: Symbolic
Definition
Popular symbols include things like a rose to signify love, passion, England. In literature a symbol is something that is chosen to take on a particular meaning by the writer, even though its association with that meaning may not be immediately obvious. Unlike an image, it appeals to the intellect as well as the imagination.
A word or image to which is linked, in the listener's mind, to an idea, image or word, usually semi-automatically.
1. Imitation, copy, likeness, statue, picture in literature, art or imagination.
2. A figure of speech in which a person or object or happening is described in terms of some other person, object or action (i.e. as a metaphor or simile)
